I'd recommend going on a Friday mid-morning rather than first thing in the morning simply because principals and all school personnel are all caught up herding students to their proper places, dealing with covering for teachers who call in sick, etc., etc.

Thanks, Nortrud. As I may leave a bit later for work on Mondays and Wednesdays, should I appear unannounced early tomorrow at the principal's office? Sam.

LPRA ought to have a constant dialogue with the principal covering mutual cooperation.Parents who pick up their kids are frequently inconsiderate, blocking driveway, double & triple parking, disposing of trash from their cars on the street, etc. These issues have been around forever. We've tried to work with the PTA at times - perhaps, the approaching the principal may be a better route this time. I'll bring your concerns of the ongoing problem to the board at the next meeting on Monday. Hi Sam & Miriam, If I may may chime in. LPRA ought to have a constant dialogue with the principal covering mutual cooperation. Parents who pick up their kids are frequently inconsiderate, blocking driveway, double & triple parking, disposing of trash from their cars on the street, etc. These issues have been around forever. We've tried to work with the PTA at times - perhaps, the approaching the principal may be a better route this time. Dear Miriam,
Are you referring here to my concerns about drop-off and pick-up times at Hawthorne School? The congestion, noise, garbage, and sometimes rudeness? Why is there no crossing guard stationed there? Shall I go in myself and chat up the principal?
Otherwise, after several successive calls to the YPD, Purser Place has indeed gone quiet, e.g. one night after I called, four patrol cars showed up, and I think the message is out that the south end of that street is no place to hang out, play loud music, and carry out drug deals. Hawthorne School's playground should be locked at night, for it is a gathering place for adolescents and can be very noisy.
I know that the YPD is stretched thin and its people do their best. Ditto for the LPRA. Thanks very much. Sam.

Dear Sam,
Nortrud forwarded your email to me as our rep to the Third Precinct
Council. I presented the problem to Capt. Hellthaler at Tuesday's
meeting. Let me say that the police are really trying to do their job and
that any lack of response is due to a real shortage of police coverage at that
time. Their number has been cut over the past few years.
At any rate, Capt. H. said that a directed patrol is sent in the morning
when available. Lt. Hanley will check on nighttime problem. Please
let me know what ensues. If there is no improvement, the best thing
to do if you can is to come in person to the precinct meeting . The next
one is on Tuesday night, Nov. 19 at 7:30 at the community center on
Belvedere and Riverdale. If you'd rather, I can handle it again for you, but I
think it is better "from the horse's mouth".
Hope this is helpful.
Miriam Pistone
