Ludlow Neighborhood Block Watch
Possible door-to-door scam in neighborhood

Several hours ago I answered a knock on the door by two young men outside. Both were casually dressed. One white (who did the talking) and the other a black “trainee”. Both wore ID cards, although with the back part to me. I did not ask to see the IDs.
They wondered if I was aware of 3rd-world poverty and help-a-family/person for $1 (or whatever) per day. They waved a glossy flier in front of me as they said this. I was pressured to sign on immediately via a mobile communication device they were carrying. Suspicious, I took the flier and offered to read it over and go on-line to register. After I again declined to register immediately with them on their mobile device they grabbed the flier from me, saying I couldn’t have it, and hightailed it down the driveway.
They continued walking down Beechwood Terrace towards Sunnyside. At that point I called YPD. They said they would send a cruiser and that I might be contacted by the Officers later.
They may be legitimate – but working for an organization with a new, and dangerous, business model. I do not know if these people would have “required” a credit card number from me in order to “register”. Beware.

They came to our house at 123 Franklin. I sent them on their way before investigating, we were eating dinner.

Apparently they were doing the whole neighborhood. When I told them that "92 cents per day" came to over $300 a year, he seemed surprised. I told him that there was no way I could do that, he thanked me and went off. Have no idea if it was legit. Wonder how many people signed up?

This appears to be a legit org. raising funds the hard way. Unfortunately, these fellows were not trained well for the job. Some folks in LPRA, in the early '90, raised funds the same way for the Citizens Campaign for the Environment, a national org., while, at the same time, collecting signatures opposing the proposed sludge pelletizing plant planned by the County at the YJWWTP. We were able muster a county wide opposition against the proposal then - & the thing was not built. Still have all the petitions, fully signed - stored in a box.
