What time of day did these thefts occur?

A school kid broke into my car at the end of November. Middle of a weekday, quiet block (Fairfield, between Ashton and Beechwood), pretty sure he figured nobody would be home. But I was home, so he didn't have a chance to actually steal anything.

I called it in. The responding officers said they'd make a few passes by that evening, in case anybody tried to come back. (Though I felt pretty certain nobody would.) Also said that patrols are scheduled based on crime statistics, so it's important to file a report for all crimes.

I don't think a thief is likely to try squeezing through a just-big-enough hole in glass, because they'd be very likely to end up getting cut in the process. If the entire window wasn't cleared out, I'd be skeptical that anybody actually entered.

There's always the possibility of vandalism (or an intent to steal, but then not following through), but if it were a person that broke the window, then there should probably be a rock or something similar in your garage, that was used to break it. If you don't see something like that, your first guess that it was storm-related might actually be correct.

Good morning all. Thank you for including me in your email chain, so that I can better direct my officers to address this potential crime trend. I will review any recent crimes in the area, however I don’t recall seeing a spike in the property crimes that are being mentioned. In the meantime, I will certainly have the patrol cars give the area more attention. The response from the Department should never be "there is little we can do", as there is much we can do, even as simply as raising awareness, accurately reporting/tracking crimes, and developing an appropriate police response based on our findings.

Even if there is little crime in an area, a police presence should exist, in order to deter the belief that a crime can be committed. I am including a link that gives access to crime safety tips and our Department webpage, should the association want to disperse to the residents. We also have a department app for smartphones, where tips can be texted in anonymously.

Our 3rd Pct. Community Council Meeting is Tuesday February 21st. However if the association plans a meeting sooner, please let me know.
