Dear friends & neighbors,
I want to share with you the details of an assault that took place on Friday night in our neighborhood. I think some of you may have heard about this already, but I thought it might be useful to share this with everyone.
I was walking my dog Friday night (4/6) at about 8:45pm, walking west down Franklin Avenue. When I turned south on Sunnyside, I noticed a group of at least 5 teenage boys walking towards me. They followed me for a bit and then the oldest came closer and asked me for a dollar. I said no and kept walking. They kept following me up Belvedere and started trying to engage in a conversation about why I wouldn’t stop to talk with them. I tried to be as friendly as possible while also telling them that I was just trying to walk my dog and was glad to have met them, but was going to continue my walk. They kept following me and I asked them to stop as I turned around and started back down Belvadere towards my house on Franklin. They kept following me up Franklin and we stopped a few more times with me trying to diffuse the situation by asking them what they were trying to do, etc. About 3 houses away from my home they lunged at me but stopped short - to try to scare me - which they did. I turned around and asked them why they were trying to scare me - and kept walking towards my house. Right in front of my house, 2 or 3 of them ran up behind me and punched me in the face, knocking me through my hedges into my yard (they didn’t know it was my house), which was fortunate I think because they actually couldn’t get to me and they ran off as I yelled for help. My wife and daughter came right out and we called the police right away, who showed up very quickly. Many police responded, and found 3 of the teenagers near the PEARLS school. I was taken over to them and was able to positively identify 2 of them. They were arrested and I am pressing charges. The police seemed to know about them so I imagine they have had prior interactions with the police.
I am shaken up, but feeling grateful to have escapes relatively unscathed. I have a bit of a black eye, and sore face, broken glasses, etc. - but nothing terrible. They didn’t steel anything. Our dog was not hurt (and he was of no help either being a little guy!). I’m glad that the police were able to catch them so quickly. As far as assaults go, this one went pretty well… In 18 years of living here, this has never happened to us and we’re trying to think of this as the anomaly that I hope it was.
Be safe out there!

Thank you for sharing this frightening story. I am glad you are OK. This truly is atypical of our neighborhood and I say that as a resident for 30 something years. Hope you heal quickly! Patricia Sent from my iPhone Sent: Sun, Apr 8, 2018 12:38 pm

Jason,
So sorry to hear this. Glad to hear that you seem to be OK given that the incident occurred in the first place. This is, to say the least, not good.
Thanks for letting us know. I may have to rethink my safety precautions (just about none.)

Hi Jason, I'm so sorry that you experienced this. I exchanged emails with Captain McCormack today and he described the incident as you did. Two suspects were arraigned in court today. Captain McCormack has instructed Third Precinct Supervisors to make the surrounding area a "Directed Patrol", which means more plain clothes and uniformed officers.
There was also a robbery at Ludlow/Bridge St on 4/8 at 23:42. A man was accosted by 3 men who took his wallet. The Captain has asked the MTA to give the area special attention.
I'm not sure why there is a spike in crime, but ti is upsetting. We have had a Neighborhood Watch Group in the past. I think we should resurrect it. What do people think?
