On Monday, December 20, 2010, Nortrud Spero and Kathe Hertzberg met NYS Assemblyman Gary Pretlow for a “tour” of the proposed site of the Dog Park. Looking at the site from the walkway near Franklin Avenue, Pretlow was initially concerned that the space was not big enough. However, when we took him closer to the Culver Street end and pointed out where the Dog Park entrance would b, he agreed that, while not spacious, the space would be adequately comfortable for a dog run. He expressed concern that an 8-foot high fence was unnecessarily high and that too much tall, thick landscaping might make it easier for criminals to remain hidden. These are all points worthy of consideration by our Planning and Design Committee.
As our Representative, with key connections in the State government, Pretlow is in a position to be a pivotal force in support of our case. Since the proposed site is on State-owned land, his efforts to clear the way with the relevant State agencies is going to be critical to our success.
On another front, our paper petition canvassers here in Ludlow Park are making major progress. Ashton Road is the first assignment to be completed. We still need volunteers to help out, so if you have any time available over the next month, please let me know at LudlowParkDogPark@gmail.com
Thanks to all who have been working quietly behind the scenes to spread the word about our online petition (www.thepetitionsite.com/1/a-dog-park-in-ludlow-park/) to friends and family. We’re already 25% of the way towards our goal of 1,000 signatures! This national and international base of support will be invaluable as we attempt to gain the attention and financial support of private corporations and foundations. Please continue to search for friendly souls who will sign on!
Here’s hoping that 2011 will be the year that our Dog Park becomes a reality!
