What is a Blockwatcher?
A Blockwatcher is a concerned citizen who OBSERVES and REPORTS emergency situations in their neighborhood. The emergency can range from a serious motor vehicle accident, fire, major disturbance, to any criminal act.
Blockwatchers are not encouraged to become actively involved in the apprehension of a criminal.
Blockwatchers are given an identification number that they use when reporting an emergency condition. Identificaiton of the Blockwatcher will be known only to the Commanding Officer of the Crime Prevention Unit and, in an emergency situation, the Public Safety Dispatcher. The Commanding Officer will maintain a file containing all Blockwatch Association members. The officers assigned to respond to an emergency condition will not know the identity of the Blockwatcher who reported the emergency. This procedure is used to protect the anonymity of the Blockwatcher.
Tips for reporting criminal activity
- Provide specific direction of the location and direction the person is going if leaving scene
- Provide specific descriptions of objects and people
- If car is involved provide the color, model and license plate
- If a person is involved, deascribe clothes and color, the skin color, approximate age, specific features of this person, approximate weight and height
