Waterfront Proposal at Critical Stage Your Help Needed Today -- and on Sept. 23
We're still pressing for definitive word from city officials -- but it looks like the Yonkers City Council will vote on Tuesday, Sept. 23, to approve, as final, the developer Struever Fidelco Capelli's Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the Yonkers waterfront. In spite of residents offering nearly 1,700 suggestions, comments and concerns throughout the public process the DEIS reflects that these have been overwhelmingly ignored by the developer.
Just a few of the concerns include:
Woefully inadequate waterfront open space for both current and new Yonkers residents. Eliminating the Prospect Street Bridge would cause major traffic jams and cut off river access for residents. Still pushing for 25-story waterfront towers -- despite repeated public rejection -- that would cast shadows on the existing city and forever eliminate precious Palisades views. Lack of safeguards for using state funds earmarked for "daylighting" the Saw Mill River to create a vibrant downtown amenity. Unanswered questions about impacts on existing, local businesses. Three things you can do
Attend the City Council meeting and join your neighbors in sending a message -- loud and clear -- that voting to approve this document is premature: Tuesday, Sept. 23, 8:00 p.m. City Council Chambers, 4th Floor Yonkers City Hall 40 South Broadway, Yonkers
E-mail a letter to members of the City Council and to Chuck Lesnick, president of the City Council.
Download this flyer [attached] to e-mail to friends or print and give it to them. How about posting the flyer at a prominent downtown location to help engage people? Stay informed. Stay involved. Act now!
Thanks for your support for a vibrant public Yonkers waterfront.
Sincerely,
Ned Sullivan President Scenic Hudson
